ANCHORAGE — Searchers have found the body of a snowmobiler who was caught in an avalanche in Alaska’s interior.
Alaska State Troopers say they were notified shortly after noon Tuesday that the body of 38-year-old Russel Linzner of Fairbanks had been recovered. Troopers say Linzner’s body was found buried 5- to-7 feet below the surface.
Troopers were notified Monday evening by a snowmobiler with Linzner’s party. The caller said Linzner was believed to have been buried by the avalanche in the mountains near Summit Lake.
Troopers say the closest responders were two hours away and troopers would not have been able to make it to the scene until after dark, which they say would make a search highly dangerous in the avalanche-vulnerable area.
According to troopers, the body is being transported to the state medical examiner’s office.
