Capital City Fire/Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Chad Cameron credited the smoke detectors in a residence for averting a more extensive fire at a residence Friday morning.
CCFR responded to the possible structure fire on Riverside Drive at 6 a.m. Friday, Cameron said in a press release. The owner stated the smoke detectors were going off and there was a light haze of smoke in the residence. Upon arrival, crews found the light smoke and began trying to find the fire. The fire was found to be located in the crawl space under the first floor of the residence. Crews were able to extinguish the fire once it was found underneath the floor.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Cameron said.
This is a great example of smoke detectors working appropriately, alerting the occupant and saving a life and the structure, her added. Smoke detectors in crawl spaces connected to other detectors for alerting is a great idea to keep everyone safe.
