ANCHORAGE — Alaska State Troopers have a new gadget they say will help with underwater rescue and recovery efforts.
KTVA-TV reported that troopers and Village Public Safety Officers are currently training with a submersible robotic camera that uses sonar to detect underwater objects or bodies.
Troopers say it could be particularly handy when divers aren’t available to search Alaska’s murkey rivers.
Similar equipment was used in December, when George Evan and Sally Stone went missing near Bethel during a four-wheeler trip. Authorities used the sonar equipment to find Evan’s body, which was about a quarter of a mile away from where they found the four-wheeler and the body of their traveling companion.
The Kodiak Area Native Association bought the remote operating vehicle.
