The Juneau Public Libraries now has more than 30 local oral history interviews in the library’s permanent collection and archive.
These interviews, many of which focus on Alaska Native education, were recorded over the past two years as part of a StoryCorps @ Your Library grant and help to preserve the many perspectives and voices of our community. Recordings were done in Juneau, Haines, and Klukwan, and CD recordings of the full length interviews will be available for checkout to the public.
In addition to StoryCorps, a national oral history organization, the project was funded by the American Library Association Public Programs Office, with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The project also received local support and collaboration from the Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, the Haines Borough Public Library, Central Council Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, the Alaska Native Brotherhood, the Alaska Native Sisterhood, Sealaska Heritage Institute, Goldbelt Heritage Foundation, KTOO Public Media, the University of Alaska Southeast, the Alaska Library Association and the Alaska State Library and Museum.
Please join Juneau Public Libraries for a reception and celebration of this project at 5:30 tonight, December 16, at the Mendenhall Valley Library.
