Saturday’s sunny weather broke a 75-year-old high-temperature mark as Juneau and Alaska stayed on track for its warmest year since modern record-keeping began.
According to measurements taken by the National Weather Service at Juneau International Airport, the thermometer reached 76 degrees on Saturday. That surpassed by one degree the record set that date in 1941.
Temperatures Sunday reached 73 degrees at the airport, three degrees shy of the record but still 12 degrees above normal for this point in the year.
Juneau’s warm, sunny weather accompanied similar conditions across the state. Record temperatures were recorded on both weekend days in Anchorage. Talkeetna, Cordova, Valdez and Barrow all saw unusually high temperatures over the weekend.
Yakutat saw record-high temperatures on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Weather Service forecast for the rest of the week calls for cloudy, cooler conditions with scattered showers Tuesday. The clouds are expected to part on Friday, allowing the return of warmer weather.
