A Juneau man pleaded not guilty in court Monday after he was indicted on one count of attempted murder in the first degree and three counts of assault in the first degree.
Brent M. Sanders, 26, allegedly stabbed his girlfriend multiple times on Jan. 31, leaving the 37-year-old woman with a knife stuck in her left temple.
Juneau District Attorney James Scott said Sanders repeatedly stabbed the woman in the upper back and then in the head. The position of the knife was potentially life-threatening and the decision was made to remove it surgically, which is why the woman was flown to Anchorage, Scott added.
Scott noted that the victim had not been cooperative and that she agreed to testify in front of the grand jury if he asked that the no-contact order against Sanders be lifted.
Sanders is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 21 for a bail hearing; he is being held in custody at Lemon Creek Correctional Center on $100,000 bail. His trial has been set to start April 24.
