A teenage boy died Saturday evening after he failed to make it to shore after jumping into the water by the Glory Hole off Treadwell Ditch Trail, according to the Juneau Police Department.
The body of the 17-year-old boy, who was not identified by police, was recovered Sunday afternoon by the Alaska State Troopers. His next of kin has been notified.
According to a JPD information release, at about 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, police received a call from a friend of the boy who said the boy had jumped into the water, surfaced briefly, but never made it to shore after he and two other boys went to the Glory Hole area to hike, dive and swim. The Glory Hole is a former open-pit mine from the historic Treadwell era that is now filled with water.
Capital City Fire/Rescue and Juneau Mountain Rescue responded to the scene to search, but could not locate the boy and the search was turned over to the AST.
According to police investigation, “the platform the boy had jumped from was steep, treacherous and difficult to move through,” and his death is not considered suspicious.
