For the second time this year, MasterCard customers banking with First National Bank Alaska are reporting receiving text messages asking for private information.
In a press release Tuesday, bank officials said that Alaskan cardholders were directed in text messages to call an 800 number, then give their 16-digit card number, expiration date and personal identification number.
“We do not use text message alerts to notify cardholders of possible fraud,” said First National Vice President Valerie Bale.
According to the press release, the text message reads “mastercard alert for [recipient phone number]. Call 8447079217.”
The bank’s marketing department reported there has not been a breach in the bank’s security as a result of the scam.
A similar text scam hit First National customers in Alaska in May. At that time, more than 50 customers reported getting a message, which read: “This is a message from MasterCard. Your [D]ebit [C]ard is [l]ocked. Contact [u]rgent 844-334-4730.”
First National’s press release states that anyone who believes their information has been compromised should contact his or her bank immediately.
