Editor’s Note: I am so pleased to announce that the Empire has a new photo intern, University of Alaska Southeast student Richard McGrail. We are very much looking forward to working with him this semester, and can’t wait to start seeing his work in print. Keep an eye out for his photo credit! — Emily Russo Miller, Empire Editor
From Richard:
I moved to Juneau in September 2017 to pursue the certification program in Outdoor Skills and Leadership at UAS. I came up from Santa Cruz, California, where I developed an interest in photography by taking images of dogs playing at a beach on the weekends. Eventually, I began photographing dogs for a nonprofit in Santa Cruz called UnChained, an organization that teaches “at risk” youth to train shelter dogs. My interests in photography have since grown. In particular, I’m drawn to questions related to social distributions of well-being; to how people endure in conditions of adversity; to the ways in which humans interpret and interact with the natural world; and to capturing the multifaceted aspects of wildlife.
