On Aug. 13, 1986, the Juneau School District decided that it implement a new drug policy that orders strict punishment for those caught with beer or marijuana at school. Policy consequences included escalating penalties for repeated offenses, exclusion from school-sponsored extracurricular activities for 30 days, short-term suspension from classes, mandatory Saturday school and automatic enrollment in eight one-hour drug counseling and education sessions. The new policy would be under a one-year trial period. The school board also learned that declining enrollment in JSD schools would mean yet another cut to the schools’ budget.
In more budget related news, Gov. Bill Sheffield ordered Office of Management and Budget Director Jay Hogan to find funds for the state’s ferry system after finding the system’s potential alternatives unsatisfactory.
