On Aug. 21, 1986, eight of Alaska’s gubernatorial GOP candidates in the upcoming election fought hard in a televised debate regarding a proposed state natural gasline. In response to an attack, one candidate clarified that money from the Permanent Fund Dividend would not help finance the natural gasline, but instead would be financed privately.
In more budget-related news, the City and Borough of Juneau and its unionized employees had agreed to defer their pay raise if CBJ did not increase in revenue in the upcoming year.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board came to Juneau to look into a plane crash near Pelican on Tuesday afternoon. The plane crashed on Craig Mountain, leaving two men dead. The Alaskan lawyer and fisherman were campaigning for a Republican gubernatorial candidate in different fishing communities before the crash.
