On Aug. 28, 1986, Gov. Bill Sheffield and his administration were trying to adjust to the hard loss he took in the Democratic primary for governor on Tuesday. While Sheffield planned to stay home and rest until next week, his staff was preparing for the change in leadership that would happen once the new governor is picked.
On the Republican side, Anchorage resident Arliss Sturgulewski was the first woman to win a major party’s nomination for governor. In November, she will be up against Democratic nominee Steve Cowper, who ousted incumbent Gov. Sheffield from the bid.
In other news, the Juneau Planning Commission was drafting a policy regarding when and where mobile homes can be driven and placed around town.
