On Dec. 31, 1986, the Juneau Empire ran a feature on the past year, saying that Gov. Cowper’s administration put the Alaska economy on the top of his priority list because of falling oil prices controlled by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
Locally, the top news stories of the year involved the Juneau economy, the election of three newbies to represent Juneau in the Alaska State Legislature and the reorganization of the University of Alaska-Juneau.
The Empire also announced there would be no edition Jan. 1 for the new year.
