On July 10, 1986, top officials of the Alaska Public Employees Association, the largest state employee union in Alaska, were accused of being reimbursed with union funds after they agreed to give the money back to the union.
In statewide news, Fairbanks Mayor Bill Walley was running for governor against incumbent Gov. Bill Sheffield. He boosted his campaign on Alaska’s economy, saying that Alaska deserves a “balanced economy” and that it can be achieved through supporting oil exploration and development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
