On July 11, 1986, Alaska’s oil revenue continued to drop along with the price of a barrel of oil. The state faced gaining another $500 million to $1 billion in debt, prompting state government to consider a special session so that the Legislature could work on the deficit’s newest leak.
The rise of the League of Women Voters took root, with its leader, Karen Rasmussen, and many other members seen sporting tagline buttons at every City and Borough of Juneau meeting. The group was founded to ensure public transparency in public meetings and to follow issues of interest to the group.
The Snowbirds, Canada’s air demonstration squadron, arrived in Juneau from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, to meet Juneau citizens and rehearse at a free public picnic.
