On July 3, 1986, the passengers aboard the cruise ship The Daphne stayed in Juneau for the day as the ship headed to British Columbia for repairs. With the help and support of the whole town, each passenger was able to find housing accommodations and safe flights back to Seattle.
As electoral season continued, a new competitor filed his candidacy against incumbent Gov. Bill Sheffield. A New Democrat, Steve Cowper focused his platform on the economy, stating that it and the government should remain separate from one another.
