On July 7, 1986, the Juneau Empire recapped the many celebratory Independence Day events in the newspaper. Juneau and Douglas residents had their picture taken by photographer Ron Klein, who used a 64-year-old Cirkuit camera to capture nearly 1,000 community members after the Independence Day parade.
“Things change. There’ll be buildings that disappear and people that disappear,” Klein said, then the only photographer in Juneau who could produce panoramic images. “It’s my way of giving the people something.”
With a three-week hiatus over, City and Borough of Juneau Assembly members came back into session with a large workload ahead of them. Issues included a mining ordinance, a project for housing mentally ill residents and a resolution thanking a senator for his service.
During the J.D. Pence Northwest Open Invitational Swim Meet in Eugene, Oregon, Juneau’s Glacier Swim Club placed eighth against the competing 22 swim teams.
“This Day in Juneau History” is compiled by Empire intern Tasha Elizarde, who sums up the day’s events — 30 years ago — by perusing Empire archives.
