On June 13, 1986, the City and Borough of Juneau Board of Education announced that it made the necessary cuts to its budget. Due to the reduction, 33 teaching jobs, 26.5 classified jobs and three administrative jobs were removed in order for the flat amount to reach the goal of $25 million. Although the plan was labelled final, it was subject to revision as time went on.
Despite the budget, the Juneau Education Association and the board wanted to negotiate the teachers’ wage increase; due to the school season’s closure, however, talks remained inactive at the time.
With the budget process moving, the razors of the U.S. Coast Guards were, too. Coast Guardsmen were given an issue requiring them to be clean-shaven, only allowing “military appearing” moustaches as an exception.
