On June 30, 1986, a U.S. Bureau of Mines employee died after falling down near Middle Peak, southeast of Juneau, while he and three other employees were searching for evidence of past mining activity in the area.
The Alaska Department of Revenue was investigating reports that more than 100 people had signed away rights to their Permanent Fund Dividend in exchange for $200 in cash at a Fairbanks bar.
Don Young, the Alaska’s incumbent U.S. Congressman, was running for his eighth consecutive term.
