On Nov. 5, 1986, Alaska’s governor was elected. Fairbanks lawyer Steve Cowper won against Sen. Arliss Sturgulewski with 46.7 percent of the vote. Both Frank Murkowski and Don Young won their respective seats in the U.S. Congress, and Juneau voted Bill Hudson and Fran Ulmer as its two state representatives. Jim Duncan won Juneau’s state Senate seat.
Juneau had voted against Murkowski, voting Democrat Glenn Olds at 49.8 percent to Murkowski’s 49.2 percent. As for the rest, Juneau was in line with the rest of the state.
