On Oct. 1, 1986, the body of a teen who was first reported missing in September was found a quarter mile away from Brotherhood Bridge. The teen was last seen leaving a party on the Mendenhall River near Dredge Lake. A comprehensive search followed, but nothing was found because of the changing river level.
Meanwhile, five people who had been involved in a plane crash near Outer Point on Douglas Island were able to climb down to safety after their accidental treetop landing. The passengers were able to lower themselves from the trees 70 feet above by rope. No one was reported injured.
In the nation’s capitol, the Alaska Federation of Natives noted they would accept last-minute changes to a bill on proposed amendments to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement if the Senate added a provision requiring a ratification vote by Native shareholders. Although Alaska’s Congressional delegation agreed to the compromise, the measure would prove difficult to pass with so little time left in the session.
