On Oct. 15, 1986, the United Way of Southeast Alaska set a goal to raise $235,000 for its campaign to raise funds for regional social service organizations, such as women’s shelters and Boy Scout groups. With the steady decline of government funding, the group’s fundraising was more crucial that it had been in the past.
Meanwhile, Alaska State Trooper Tom Clemons was one of five people who won an award from the National Association for Search and Rescue. Clemons lived in Juneau at the time he was awarded.
Meanwhile, Juneau Police Department Officer Janet Lown worked in schools to teach students about crime and persuade them to make safe decisions. The program, funded partially by a federal grant, hoped to curb the crime rate in Juneau. She also worked on a project to curb drug and alcohol abuse in the high school by adding a “safe center” for students who need somewhere to hang out away from the influence of peer pressure.
