On Oct. 17, 1986, Alaska State Troopers began looking for a man who reportedly died from a cocaine overdose. They searched from downtown to Montana Creek Bridge.
The International Olympic Committee was considering placing the 1994 Olympics in Anchorage. Although the chance of the games being held in Alaska were slim, especially in the wake of the France 1992 Games announcement, the Anchorage IOC committee continued to work for the bid to become a reality.
Meanwhile, because U.S. Congress was unable to pass a federal budget on time, some federal employees in Alaska were forced to take the day off. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Environmental Protection Agency office in Juneau were just two agencies that shut down early.
