On Oct. 7, 1986, many of the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly members who attended an informal meeting hosted by Mayor Ernie Polley apologized. Since the nature of the business discussed did not technically involved city-borough business, Mayor Polley did not believe the meeting was illegal under state law, but he and the Assembly apologized for the event nonetheless.
The municipal election gathered few votes in the morning, with most of the voters expected to show in the afternoon. Along with choosing CBJ Assembly and Juneau School Board members, Juneau voters were asked to support or oppose a 4 percent sales tax proposition.
In Mendenhall Valley, a main water line broke, spilling 25,000 pounds of water pressure and even causing a three-million gallon gas leak near Old Glacier Highway. The leak was caused by intense rain, which had worn out the support for the valve over time.
