On Sept. 22, 1986, the Juneau Superior Court ruled that Alaska teachers cannot be laid off under emergency regulations adopted by the Alaska Board of Education after the regulations were challenged by the National Education Association-Alaska. The court decided that the regulations violate a state law that governs teacher layoffs, effectively overturning the Board of Education’s decision.
On the political side, U.S. Congressman Don Young had been given $160,000 thus far by political action groups for his re-election bid. The campaign contributions, which was decidedly more than all of the contributions given to his opponents, showed his lead for state representative.
A Douglas resident’s guide dog was killed in a hit-and-run accident. The dog ran out into the road after giving the resident “a last wag of her tail” when she was hit by the oncoming car.
