The Southeast Master Gardener Association wants to show off the best gardening in Juneau, and is doing so with a five-hour tour Saturday.
The organization’s annual Summer Garden Tour runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, leading guests through six of Juneau’s most distinctive gardens. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event, and can be bought either at seak-mastergardeners.org, at the Juneau Arts and Humanities Center or at Hearthside Books.
Garden Tour Co-Chair Melissa Plosay said some of the gardens are at familiar homes, such as Co-Chair Patricia Hartman’s house, while other gardens are just ones that caught her eye.
“A few of them, I just drove by and thought, ‘Wow, that’s amazing,’” Plosay said, “so I went and knocked on their door and said, ‘You have a beautiful garden. Would you ever consider (this)?’”
Plosay said people can suggest a garden to include on garden tours by going to the organization’s website and writing in. With gardens that are in people’s backyards away from the street, sometimes impressive gardens are hidden away without anyone seeing them. Plosay wants to bring those gardens to the tour.
“I’m sure a lot of people have these beautiful secret gardens out there that they’d like to share with us,” Plosay said.
