Glacier Bay National Park has set the date for the grand-opening ceremonies celebrating the a new tribal house.
Aug. 25 is the grand opening of the Xunaa Shuká Hít, the Huna Tribal House built at Bartlett Cove.
Glacier Bay is the traditional homeland of the Huna, who were evicted by advancing glaciers and the establishment of the park by the federal government. The house, whose name (roughly translated) means “Huna ancestors’ house” is believed to be the first Huna tribal house in Glacier Bay in 250 years.
