BETHEL — The president of the Association of Village Council Presidents has resigned months after several village tribal leaders called for an investigation into his organization’s spending of federal funds.
The organization announced that Myron Naneng announced his resignation Wednesday at an executive board meeting. His stepping down from the post was effective immediately.
KYUK-AM reported that the organization’s vice president Mike Coffman was selected as acting president. The regional tribal nonprofit serves 56 villages in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region.
Naneng served as president of the organization for 24 years, including his final year when 30 employees were laid off. KYUK reported earlier this year that documents it obtained show almost a decade of misspent federal grant money.
The radio station said AVCP did not immediately respond with further comment.
