ANCHORAGE — Alaska State Troopers say they may sit out a snowmobile and ski race that has in the past attracted raucous crowds.
Spokesman Tim Despain told Anchorage television station KTUU that the agency has not determined whether it will staff next month’s Arctic Man Classic near Summit Lake.
He said troopers continue to evaluate “resource availability.”
Arctic Man is a race in which a downhill skier glides down a mountain, grabs a towline behind a snowmobile, gets pulled up a second peak and skis down to the finish line.
Race organizer Howard Thies said the race will have its own security. He said he would welcome troopers but the event can go on without them.
About 13,000 people attended last year. The race is scheduled for April 4-8.
