ANCHORAGE — Alaska State Troopers say a 24-year-old Russian Mission man died after his snowmobile sunk in an overflow area south of the western Alaska village.
Gary Kozevnikoff was found dead Saturday afternoon after the snowmobile was spotted by a pilot involved in the search for Kozevnikoff.
Troopers say Kozevnikoff had been among four snowmobilers traveling between Kwethluk and Russian Mission.
One of the snowmobiles arrived at Russian Mission, but the two other snowmobiles were reported overdue late Friday morning. All but Kozevnikoff were returned safely to Russian Mission by Saturday evening.
Troopers say Kozevnikoff’s snowmobile had gotten stuck in the overflow area. Troopers say he fell through the river ice and died from weather exposure.
According to troopers, an autopsy was being conducted by the state medical examiner’s office.
