Two people arrested at Juneau residence after receiving package with $65,700 of suspected illegal drugs

JPD: Drug investigators intercepted package, then delivered it after inspecting contents.

Two people were arrested at a Mendenhall Valley residence last Monday after receiving a package with methamphetamine, cocaine and pills suspected of containing fentanyl with a combined street value of about $65,700, according to an information release published Monday by the Juneau Police Department.

The arrests occurred after investigators with the Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs (SEACAD) task force located and intercepted a suspicious package being mailed, according to the release. Inside the package were about 2,842 pills imprinted with the “M30” logo suspected of containing fentanyl, 77.25 net grams of methamphetamine and 0.94 net grams of cocaine.

“SEACAD delivered the package to its intended destination, a residence in the 8100 block of Erin Street,” the release states. “About forty minutes after the delivery, 46-year-old James Robert Newman and 43-year-old Brenda Beth Oboyle, arrived at the residence in a vehicle. James Newman went inside the residence, while Brenda Oboyle stayed in the vehicle. Soon afterward, the package was opened and SEACAD investigators contacted the occupants of the residence. Newman and two other adult males were contacted inside the residence, and O’boyle was contacted in the vehicle.”

Newman and Oboyle (whose name is listed as O’boyle in state court records) were subsequently arrested and taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

Newman was arrested on five charges of misconduct involving a controlled substance (MICS) while Oboyle was arrested on two such charges, according to JPD. However, both were subsequently charged by prosecutors with the same five counts.

Both defendents had felony first appearances Friday at the Juneau Courthouse on charges of second-degree MICS (a class A felony), third-degree MISC (a class B felony) and three counts of fourth-degree MICS (a class C felony), according to the Alaska Court System online database. Preliminary hearings for both defendants are scheduled July 19.
