Juneau Ultimate, a local group of Ultimate Frisbee players, holds one of their twice-weekly pickup games tonight at the Juneau-Douglas High School field at 8 p.m. They also play Sundays at 3 p.m. at the Thunder Mountain High School turf field in the Mendenhall Valley.
Ultimate, previously known as Ultimate Frisbee, is a fast-growing, non-contact sport which resembles soccer or football but played with an airborne disc. Participants play on a rectangular field with end zones marked at both ends. The goal is to pass the flying disc down the field without it touching the ground.
Passing the disc into the end zone without it touching the ground constitutes a score. If the frisbee touches the ground, however, the opposing team takes possession of the disc. Fouls are called by players.
Ultimate players of all skill levels are welcome at the pickup games. A donation of $5-10 is asked to help with field costs, but nobody is turned away for lack of contribution. For more information, visit juneauultimate.org.
