The U.S. Coast Guard was still searching on Saturday for a 64-year-old man near Prince of Wales Island.
Coast Guard Sector Juneau received a request for assistance from Alaska State Troopers Friday afternoon after the man’s skiff was found washed ashore on northern Heceta Island.
The missing individual departed Naukati on Wednesday intending to stay on Camp Island for one night. The Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur crew and the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew were dispatched Friday after a search of the island by the troopers was unsuccessful.
The U.S. Forest Service and two good Samaritans are also searching for the man. The search area is around Sea Otter Sound on the western side of Prince of Wales Island.
Petty Officer Rich Hinderhofer said Saturday’s weather provided “good search conditions,” an improvement from Friday’s 3-foot seas.
The Coast Guard is not releasing the name of the missing person at this time.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Sector Juneau command center at 463-2980.
