Valley Lumber sold to Don Abel owner

Owner of Don Abel Building Supply buys similar business near Nugget Mall.

Two of Juneau’s longtime local building supply stores now have the same owner.

Bruce Abel, owner of Don Abel Building Supply on Glacier Highway, has purchased Valley Lumber Building Supply, a similar business situated near the Nugget Mall.

Valley Lumber’s previous owner Dan Graves confirmed the sale with the Empire on Wednesday but declined an interview. The purchase went through Aug. 2 and Graves will remain working at Valley Lumber for about another week for the transition period, he said.

“I think it’s just going to be business as usual,” Graves said.

Bruce Abel said he was unavailable for an interview Wednesday.

Both stores are owned locally and each have operated in Juneau for more than 50 years. Valley Lumber was established in 1965 by the Graves family. Don Abel is in its third generation of Abel family ownership and was established more than 73 years ago, according to the company website.
