Airport officials are asking for volunteers of all ages to help with the Juneau International Airport’s live emergency disaster drill this weekend.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, airport operators will work with Juneau’s first responders to complete a federally mandated drill. Volunteers are needed to play the roles of injured passengers, distraught family members and bystanders.
Scott Rinkenberger, airport maintenance and operations superintendent, said ideally there will be enough volunteers to act out a scenario involving the largest possible plane that lands in Juneau, which seats 180 people. But the more people who can help, the better. People can volunteer with their families and children because during an emergency an aircraft will likely carry people of all ages and sizes, Rinkenberger said.
Those interested in volunteering can send an email to volunteer@jnuairport, or call Capital City Fire/Rescue Assistant Chief Ed Quinto at 586-0259. Rinkenberger said volunteers can also just show up at 8 a.m. on Saturday near the Wings of Alaska hangar, at the east end of the airport, to pick up a volunteer script and receive further instructions.
The entire drill is estimated to last approximately four hours. Food and refreshments will be provided for participants.
