ANCHORAGE — Six walrus hunters whose boats were trapped by Chukchi Sea ice were lifted to safety Wednesday by the Coast Guard.
The agency said the six were in two 22-foot skiffs four miles off Singeak on the Seward Peninsula about 150 miles northeast of Nome.
A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted three hunters from a skiff. The other three were picked up on land and transported to the village of Shishmaref.
Alaska State Troopers alerted the Coast Guard to the plight of the hunters.
