KETCHIKAN — Ketchikan residents will no longer be able to hear the weekly warning sirens as fire officials have implemented a new testing system.
The Ketchikan Daily News reported the sirens located on the roof of the fire department have gone off around noon every Saturday. Assistant Fire Chief Jon Dorman says the sirens have been switched to a silent test.
The previous tests consisted of a steady-pulsed tone for a tsunami warning, an alternating high-low tune for a dam emergency and a PA mode for live announcements.
Dorman says the silent test will still be administered weekly, and if residents are close enough, they may hear some clicking noises.
Dorman says that starting next month, an audio test will take place at noon on the 15th of each month.
