Pay no attention to the giant bronze whale beneath the bridge. Not until Saturday, that is.
The Whale Project Committee is holding an unveiling ceremony for Juneau’s newest landmark — a six-and-a half-ton, life-sized bronze sculpture of a breaching humpback whale — on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The park in which the whale sits, located next to the Douglas Bridge, is still under construction, so the whale isn’t currently accessible to the public. But from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, people will be able to enter the park to see the whale up close.
To access the park, turn onto West 8th Street, where the Alaska Department of Fish and Game building, Department of Labor and Cycle Alaska are located.
The park will be closed to the public after the ceremony until further notice. The project is scheduled to be completed next fall.
Call the city’s Engineering Department at 586-0800 for more information.
