This Friday, sipping wine can help preserve one of Southeast Alaska’s most historic sites.

The Juneau Lighthouse Association is holding a winetasting Friday night to raise money for the preservation of the Five Finger Lighthouse at Frederick Sound. The event is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Prospector Hotel’s Douglas Room, and costs $35 at the door. There will also be a silent auction, and the funds will go to the ongoing maintenance of the lighthouse and its grounds.

Five Finger Lighthouse stands on the site of the first U.S. lighthouse in Alaska, which burned down in the early 1930s. The current lighthouse was build in 1935, and serves as not only a navigational guide in the Inside Passage, but also an example of historic architecture.

The Juneau Lighthouse Association currently owns and maintains the site, which includes the lighthouse and other historic buildings. The intent is to restore the site and eventually put a marine research site and an educational facility on the land, bringing visitors who can not only enjoy the scenery but also learn about the marine and maritime significance of the region.
