A trial date for a Juneau woman accused of stabbing a man with a fillet knife in June 2019 is set for early November.
Sonya Taton, 46, was arrested for two counts of second-degree murder, and one count each of manslaughter and assault for allegedly stabbing 61-year-old Gregory Bowen, of Juneau, with a fillet knife at a residence in Juneau four years ago. Her trial at the Juneau Courthouse is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 2.
Taton, who appeared in court via telephone for a readiness hearing Tuesday afternoon, is being held at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center in Eagle River. Taton was originally taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center following the arrest. Last fall, about half of the inmates at LCCC were transferred to other facilities due to repairs at the Juneau prison.
According to the information shared about the altercation by the Juneau Police Department in 2019, police say a woman called 911 to report a man had been wounded with a knife, and was hurt and bleeding. When officers arrived at the residence on North Douglas Highway they found Bowen on the floor with a stab wound to his abdomen.
Bowen was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police arrested Taton at the residence for a felony assault charge and seized a fillet knife that was determined to be used in the assault.
Bowen was later flown to Seattle for further treatment, however, he died at a medical center resulting from the injury two weeks later.
Taton will have a pre-trial conference at the Juneau Courthouse on Oct. 13.
