Joe Herbert Satko
Joe Herbert Satko passed away Dec. 27, 2015, in Anacortes, Washington. He was 91.
Joe arrived in Alaska aboard the “Ark of Juneau” on his 16th birthday in 1949, and in July of that year landed in Juneau amid nationwide publicity for the journey that began in Virginia. He and his family homesteaded the land between the Eagle and Herbert rivers, establishing a vegetable garden that provided fresh produce to Juneauites. After the war and short stints in Richmond, Virginia, and Spokane, Washington, Joe returned to Juneau in the early 1950’s to stay. He resided in Juneau for nearly 60 years, as owner of Joe’s Body Shop, later renamed Capital City Auto. He spent the last four years in Anacortes, Washington.
Joe is survived by two sisters, Betty and Northsea; daughter Kathy; son Herb; and seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
His wife, Irene, preceded him in death.
