Elsie May Hughes
Elsie May Hughes of Juneau passed on Jan. 1, 2016. She was 87 years old.
Hughes was born in Killisnoo, on May 14, 1928, to Jack Kasko and Mattie (Hobson) Kasko. Her Tlingit name was Goo-Dah-klaa of the Dog Salmon-Log Jam house. She married the late Frank Hughes Sr. in Juneau in 1954. She had four children, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren.
Hughes was a lifetime member of the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp #2, a past president of the Woman Auxiliary of Taku Post VFW 5559 196-62, also the Salvation Army Home League. She actively attended the Glacier Valley Church of God.
Hughes was preceded in death by her daughter, Geraldine Hunter; her husband, Frank Hughes, Sr.; her grandson, Jason Sarter; her cousins, Emma Licon, Betty Martin, Bill Samato, Sam Newman, Walter Soboleff and Joe Akagi.
She is survived in death by her children Percy Hunter Jr. and LouAnn Sear of Juneau, Colleen Sarter of Detroit and Frank (Marlene) Hughes Jr. of Kake.
A funeral service will be held on May 20 at 11 a.m. at the Alaska Memorial Park & Mortuary on Riverside Drive. All are welcome.
