Harold William Johns Sr.
Harold William Johns Sr. (76) passed away peacefully at his home in Juneau of natural causes on January 1, 2018. He was Kaagwaantaan and had the Tlingit name Kaa.chee.
Harold was born in Juneau on August 14, 1941, to Phyllis (Wanamaker) and Walter Johns, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sons David and Chaske, and sisters Lavina, Margaret, and Gloria.
Survivors include his sons Harold and Walter, granddaughter Phyillis Rose Johns Smith, great-grandchildren Kristopher and Carson Smith; and siblings Katherine, Gordon, and Walter, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Harold graduated from Jefferson High School in Daly City, CA, and from Western Washington University.
He lived for a number of years in the Bellingham area where he worked as a teacher until he moved back to Juneau and taught at Juneau-Douglas High School. He concluded his career as a middle school teacher in Ferndale, WA.
According to his family, Harold loved teaching, treated his students like his own children, and reached into his pocket many times to support students of limited resources.
