A complaint about the Trillium Landing mail service

I am a tax-paying senior citizen recently relocated to Juneau and residing in Trillium Landing, a new complex constructed for those of age 55 and older. I am writing on behalf of all residents in our building to complain of the manner in which our mail is being delivered.

While this building was under construction, it included a bank of mail boxes just inside the front door, making easy access for the residents. After said boxes had been installed, the company was informed all mail to new buildings in Juneau had to be delivered outside, meaning a sizable expense to owners having to build an additional bank of boxes to adapt to this inane policy. I have been told the rationale for this policy was taking into consideration the mail carriers’ “safety and time.” As it currently stands, the carrier has to exit the truck, walk around the bank, unlock and deposit mail in 49 boxes. While doing so, the carrier, and the mail, could very easily become soaked. They would have no protection against someone wanting to do harm, making their safety at risk. Conversely, one entry into the building, no weather elements, a secure and quick deposit of mail. It is beyond comprehension this directive was ever enforced.

There are some units in the building that are ADA. This means many people are retrieving mail in wheelchairs, using crutches, canes or other means of support. After they have successfully picked up their mail they have to return to the building, setting aside their mail while they unlock the front door (takes two hands to achieve this), hold the door open, once more pick up their mail and hopefully gain access while in their wheelchair. Not a nice way to start your day.

UPS and FedEx have entry to the building to deliver parcels; the USPS currently does not.

Please readers, rise up and make your voice heard. I began this by mentioning taxes — make your taxes work for you.

Any complaints should be addressed to the Postmaster at the Mendenhall Post Office, Susan Johnson, 789-0934.

Bette Winkler,

Juneau
