The other evening, I was having dinner with some friends. These friends truly follow in the path of Jesus. They give their time, they give their money, and most of all they give their love to others, especially those in need.
As we sat there, we tried to imagine how Jesus would react to the Catholic diocese in Juneau, in particular to its inability to accept LGBTQ individuals. We tried to imagine Jesus standing there and saying, “You are hungry. Let me feed you. Next! Oh, you are LGBTQ, sorry we only have 5 loaves and 2 fish, so you’ll have to go elsewhere. Next!”
As hard as we tried to imagine it, we just couldn’t. That is not Jesus as we know him. The Jesus that we know would have been one of the many that testified in favor of the anti-discrimination ordinance and he would have simply said: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”
