The Angoon girls basketball team staged a 12-point fourth quarter on Wednesday to overcome Hoonah 35-29 during day one of the 2016 Region V 1A Basketball Tournament.
Angoon senior guard Patricia O’Brien led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Elizabeth O’Brien with 11, Dixie George with three and Desiree Jamestown with two.
Hoonah was led by senior Morgan Stevenson with 13 points, with nine of those points coming from deep range. Junior Leticia Skaflestad scored five for the Braves in defeat, with sophomore Valarie Williams contributing four, sophomores Monique Glover and Ronie Roberts adding three each, and Alaska Skaflestad added one point.
The Eagles jumped out to a sizeable 11-5 lead after the first quarter behind eight points from Patricia O’Brien, but Hoonah put up 12 points in the second to take a 17-15 into the locker room at halftime.
Angoon extended its lead in the third, with Patricia O’Brien scoring five of her team’s eight points in the quarter, while allowing just two field goals by Hoonah.
Hoonah mustered only one field goal, a 3-pointer by Roberts, and shot 3-of-10 from the free throw line in the final quarter. Elizabeth O’Brien scored five of her points in the fourth to extend Angoon’s lead.
The Braves were 4-of-11 free throw shooting on the night, compared to 7-of-12 shooting by Angoon.
Angoon will next play Yakutat at 6:15 p.m. Thursday. Hoonah will play again at 11 a.m. Friday against an undetermined opponent.
