The Kake girls basketball team gave up a small lead in the second half of Thursday’s game against Klawock, losing 47-43 during day two of the Region V 1A Basketball Tournament.
Kake, behind 10 points in the quarter from junior Jaqueline Bennum, took a 16-14 lead after the first quarter, and then extended that lead to 30-27 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the tables started to turn.
Klawock held Kake to just five points in the third while scoring 11 of their own to retake the lead 38-35 going into the final quarter. The Chieftains outscored the Thunderbirds again in the fourth, 9-8, to advance in the winner’s bracket.
Klawock freshman Ashley Huffine led all scorers with 20 points, including draining five shots from behind the 3-point line. Sophomore Isabella Rubio added 10 points for Klawock, followed by senior Raven Chafin with nine and eighth grader Taya Marvin with seven.
Bennun scored a team-high 17 points for Kake, followed by eighth grader Willow Jackson with 10, senior Talia Davis with nine, and senior Sophia Aceveda with seven.
Klawock will next play the winner of the Yakutat/Angoon game in the girls championship at 6:15 p.m. today. Results of the Yakutat/Angoon game were not available as of press time and will appear online at juneauempire.com. Kake will play Hoonah at 10 a.m. today in the losers’ bracket.
