In the first round of the Region V 1A tournament Wednesday, the Klawock girls basketball team got the better of its opponent from Skagway. The Chieftains defeated the Panthers 47-20.
Klawock jumped to a big lead in the first quarter, with captain Ashley Huffine leading her team with 11 of the Chieftains’ 23 points in the period. Klawock held Skagway to two points in the first quarter.
From then on out the Chieftains needed only play defense and watch the clock, holding Skagway to six, one and 11 points in the final three periods.
Klawock was led by captain Ashley Huffine with 16 points. Following Huffine’s lead, teammate Vanessa Edenshaw went for nine, Taya Marvin had seven and Mariah Sanderson added six. The Chieftains got to the line 17 times in the game, making seven of those count.
None of Skagway’s players scored over three points, though they spread the ball around well with eight different players getting on the board by the end of the game. Skagway’s Hailey Jenson hit a three in the game; her team went 5-of-12 from the line.
