The Skagway boys basketball team maintained its lead all game against Angoon, living to play another day.
The Panthers bested the Eagles 40-24 on Wednesday in the losers’ bracket of the Region V 1A Basketball Tournament held at Thunder Mountain High School.
Skagway junior guard Kato Shindo led all scorers with 17 points, followed by juniors Alex Ackerman and Colton Belisle with eight each, and freshman Danny Brady with seven.
The Eagles were led in scoring by junior Jacob McCluskey with 10 points, sophomore Jaxon Collins with five, and senior Nathanial Hunter-Skeek with four.
Skagway built up a slight lead after the first quarter, 12-8, and then gave up only a single point in the second quarter for a 19-9 advantage at halftime.
Angoon posted its highest point total in the third, matching Skagway point-for-point to end the quarter 31-21.
Angoon hit a dry spell offensively in the final quarter, only scoring three points.
The Eagles were knocked out of the tournament with the loss. Skagway will next play at 12:45 p.m. today against the loser of the Klawock/Hoonah game. Results for that game can be found online at juneauempire.com
