The Skagway girls basketball team kept its hopes alive Thursday, stopping a late rally by Hydaburg to win 35-33. The Panthers will advance in the losers’ bracket to day three of the Region V 1A Basketball Tournament held at Thunder Mountain High School.
Hailey Jensen led the Panthers with nine points, followed by Madison Cox with seven, Kiara Selmer with six and Kara Whitehead with four.
The Warriors were led in defeat by freshman Lillian Borromeo’s game-high 12 points, followed by Aliyah Trout with 10 and Chandler Kadake with seven.
Hydaburg took an early 9-6 lead after the first quarter, but mustered only three points in the second, allowing the Panthers to tie the game 12-12 at halftime.
The Panthers posted 14 points in the third quarter to retake the advantage, 26-16, heading into the final quarter.
Hydaburg scored 17 fourth quarter points, with Trout scoring eight of her points in the final quarter, but weren’t able to do enough to reclaim the lead before time expired.
Skagway will next play at 2:30 p.m. today against the loser of the Yakutat/Angoon game. Results of that game were not available by press deadline and will be posted at juneauempire.com. The second loss means Hydaburg is now out of the tournament.
